A month-end close in eleven days at a freight broker

What happened

The books closed 26 days after month end, so every decision was made on numbers a month old.

The delay was three handoffs: carrier invoices arriving by email, a spreadsheet re-keyed by hand, and approvals waiting on one person. We moved invoices into the system the team already had, removed the spreadsheet, and gave approval to two people with limits.

The close now takes eleven days, and the owner gets a twelve-week cash forecast every Monday.
